Spain: Global Leader in Producing & Exporting High-Quality Black Truffles
Spain has surpassed France to become the leading producer of black truffles and, consequently, the largest exporter of this delicacy. The northeastern region of Spain serves as the heart of the black truffle market, encompassing areas such as Teruel, Huesca, Zaragoza, Lleida, Soria, and Castellón. Several factors explain Spain’s success as a truffle-producing country.
First of all, geographical advantage. The regions mentioned above are situated at altitudes ranging from 900 to 1,200 meters above sea level. Additionally, these areas are naturally shielded from strong winds thanks to the surrounding mountains, creating ideal conditions for truffle cultivation.
Another key factor behind the success of black truffle cultivation in Spain is the Mediterranean climate. Summer storms in these regions provide essential moisture for truffle formation, helping them achieve the perfect size. Meanwhile, autumns are generally free from severe frost. Furthermore, winter temperatures rarely drop below -10°C for extended periods, making them relatively mild compared to other European countries.
These favorable conditions have allowed Spain to solidify its position as the top exporter of black truffles to countries such as the United States, France, Italy, Saudi Arabia, and Japan. According to industry experts, Spain produced approximately 120 tons of black truffles in 2022—four times more than Italy (30 tons) and three times more than France (40 tons).
This success is also attributed to the experience and expertise of Spanish companies specializing in black truffles. For example, Xporum, a premium truffle company, can deliver freshly harvested truffles from its fields in just 48–72 hours to destinations like the United States.
Xporum: A Premium Black Truffle Company
Xporum operates in one of the most productive truffle regions in Spain. What sets it apart from competitors is its commitment to traditional methods. Trained dogs, specifically prepared by Xporum, identify the location of truffles, which are then individually extracted by hand. Afterward, the black truffles are cleaned according to the client’s preferences—whether with a brush or a light surface cleaning—and are carefully sorted one by one.
Throughout the entire process, no automation is used. Xporum takes pride in producing, harvesting, cleaning, and shipping each truffle with a personalized approach tailored to its clients’ needs.
